PUMWANI NURSES STRIKE

Nurses at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital in Nairobi yesterday staged a protest and ejected the hospital's CEO and matron. The nurses said that they had downed their tools because of poor working conditions.
They added that the matron Dr Severina Mbwiria had been transferred to Kangemi health centre but had refused to leave Pumwani.
"She is being protected by the CEO Dr Frida Govedi. They have misappropriated 20 million shillings and Govedi wants her to remain here so that they can cover up the scam," said Benard Inyangala, the chairman of the Kenya Local Government Workers Union.
The nurses strike brought operations at the hospital to a stand still."She takes imprest directly from the source. She has misappropriated funds by purporting that she has has supplied items to the hospital," the nurses said.
They marched into the CEO's office, overturned tables and threw chairs around before ejecting the two out.
They then locked the CEOs office.
The nurses then brought into the office Dr Esther Kiambati who they said had been posted to the hospital as the new matron. Area DO Charles Murimi intervened but was unable to calm the nurses.
"Stay here (in the office) until your appointment letter is cancelled," they told the new matron.
However, the nurses insisted that the operations at the hospital were going on as usual.
"We are the ones who worked last night. Our colleagues are in and no mother nor baby has died. All patients have been well attended to," they said.

NOLLYWOOD ACTRESS TO WALK DOWN THE AISLE

Yes, you heard that right. And, no, she’s not answering an altar call. After intense media speculation, Mercy Johnson has finally doused all tension by declaring, “Yes, I am getting married, officially, from the horse’s mouth – on the 27th of August 2011. It’s a 4-day event, the court wedding on the 25th, the traditional on the 26th, the white wedding on the 27th, and the Thanksgiving on the 28th.“

Addressing previous rumours, she says, “I did mention that I was getting engaged and I did mention that I was getting married and I said that I wanted the wedding within my birthday period, but I didn’t specify on the date. I got engaged in November 2010, so I couldn’t have mentioned that I was getting married in August 2010. So I really never came out on an interview to say I was getting married; it was just speculation, because most of my friends knew I always wanted to have a wedding on my birthday (August 28th), in a joint manner.“

Still speaking with the BN interviewer, she also reveals, “He is Prince Odianose Okojie, from Esanland (Uromi), Edo State. He is a prince from Esanland, he’s just (a) simple young person.“

Wedding Dates
Court Wedding – 25th August 2011
Engagement – 26th August 2011

A Forbes Report : WEALTHY NIGERIANS, PASTORS SPLASH $225M ON PRIVATE JETS

Here's how Forbes is reporting it...
A few wealthy Nigerians spent at least $225 million acquiring private jets between March 2010 and March 2011, a Nigerian newspaper reported on Monday. According to the report published by the Punch Newspaper, a couple of the acquisitions were made by billionaires Aliko Dangote and Mike Adenuga. Last year, Dangote acquired a US$45 million Bombardier jet as a gift to himself on his 53rd birthday, while Mike Adenuga purchased a Bombardier Global Express XRS. Both Dangote and Adenuga own at least two private planes each. Apart from wealthy business tycoons, Nigerian clergymen and spiritual leaders are also joining the very elite league of jet owners.

In March this year, David Oyedepo, a Nigerian cleric generally believed to be Africa’s wealthiest gospel preacher, acquired a Gulfstream V jet for US$30 million. Oyedepo, who presides over the Winners Chapel, one of Africa’s largest churches, now owns a private collection of four aircraft. In addition to his latest acquisition, he previously owned two Gulfstream planes and a Bombardier Challenger Aircraft. He is also reportedly creating a private hanger to accommodate his flying toys.

Oyedepo is not the only Nigerian clergyman to own a jet. Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the revered overseer of Nigeria’s largest congregation, The Redeemed Christian Church of God, is also a proud jet owner. In March 2009, the great man of God spent $30 million on a Gulfstream jet amidst widespread criticism. Pastor Sam Adeyemi, another cleric and founder of the Daystar Christian center, a flourishing Pentecostal congregation which repeatedly preaches financial prosperity, is also a jet owner.

It’s not cheap to own a private jet. On average, it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to maintain a personal plane. The majority of Nigerians frown at such flagrant displays of opulence, particularly on the path of their clergymen, given that 60% of Nigerians still live below the poverty line.

Paradoxically, the same people who complain about the extravagant lifestyles of their spiritual leaders are the same ones who finance it. Every Sunday, swarms of worshipers rush to the church to give away their hard-earned money to the pastors’ coffers in the form of tithes, offerings and special gifts with the deluded hope of multiplied financial blessings in return. For many, this is but a pipe dream. Deep down, the pastors smile; they’ve got just the perfect suckers.

P-SQUARE READY TO LAUNCH ALBUM

The multiple award-winning duo of Paul and Peter Okoye, otherwise known as P-Square announced today, that they’re staging a major ‘album concert’ for their fans and followers based in Nigeria. In anticipation of the release of their fifth studio album, the bestselling Nigerian pop singers are set to put up the performance of a lifetime; working with a carefully-selected team of dancers, choreographers, musicians and back-up acts.  A spokesperson for the duo tells us they are working day and night to ensure the forthcoming album not only surpasses all expectations, but also to make sure the big-bidget concert is a winner by kilometres.

Other acts that have held solo concerts at The Eko Hotel, since it opened for business last year are 2Face Idibia and Dbanj (and the Mohits crew). Psquare follows in this growing tradition; and there are unconfirmed reports Paris-based Asa is also contemplating her own gig for this same venue. A joint performance by King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey in 2010 failed to hold despite huge anticipation and media frenzy.

Meanwhile Psquare’s rep tells us ‘The countdown to the album release officially kicks off with this concert, billed to hold in July’. Tentatively the album will contain 10 to 13 songs. Two singles will be released in a matter of days.  The Psquare Concert will be held at the the new Expo hall of Eko Hotel and Suites on Saturday, July 30, 2011.  In their successful career, P Square have released four very successful albums; Last Nite, Get Squared, Game Over and Danger.

RNB STAR IN KENYA FOR LOUNGE UNPLUGGED

American RnB singer and songwriter Anthony David jetted into the country on Wednesday May 4 ahead of his show on Saturday night at the Nairobi National Park.
This is Anthony's second trip to Africa and he is excited about it. He will headline the concert in the wild dubbed The Lounge Unplugged. Anthony is known for his hit Words featuring India Arie. He has four albums so far. Anthony's fourth album - released on February 22 - is titled As Above So Below which features guest vocalists Algebra, rapper Phonte from Little Brother and Anthony's cousin Shawn Stockman of R&B super group Boys II Men.
Anthony will perform alongside Elani, a local group that has been making inroads in the music scene. The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter is US President Obama's favourite new artiste. Often described as the heir-apparent to his early influence Bill Withers, David is elbowing a space for intelligent lyrics and a grown man's voice in a scene that's in a race to be young. A student of Wither's lyricism; the masculine rhythms of Beres Hammond and Frankie Beverly; the storytelling of Slick Rick and Jay-Z; and the blues of Lightning Hopkins, Howling Wolf, and T-Bone Walker, David is ushering back the kind of masculine soul that men can identify with and that ladies can nestle up to.
